Curator’s Note

The seated figure in black granite was commissioned by the Estate Foundation in October 2011, fourteen days after the subject's death. The sculptor worked from twelve photographs, none taken with the subject's consent for sculptural purposes. The pose — right elbow to knee, chin resting on thumb, index finger raised to the lips — reproduces, without explicit acknowledgment, Auguste Rodin's The Thinker (1904 cast). The Estate Foundation approved the final work in March 2012.
